The meeting was first of all an occasion for a handover. Italy has in fact presided the Network during the year just ended (May 2015 – April 2016) and, as decided in the 4th Intergovernmental Meeting held in Cyprus in 2014, now it gives the way to Portugal that will coordinate the Network in the next year.
During the first phase of the meeting, which took place in Naples on the 5th May 2016, each Government Representative has disclosed the main national activities and events aimed at promoting the Mediterranean Diet, thus pointing out also the initiatives that each Government is launching for the near future.
The second part of the meeting has taken place in Pollica (SA) on the 6th May 2016 and it has focused on the disclosure of the drafts of the White Paper and the Booklet on the Mediterranean Diet – the volumes planned and prepared by Italy and distributed at the opening of the meeting – and on the related perspectives in terms of updating through a full involvement of the Network’s Communities. In this occasion each delegate of the Emblematic Communities has disclosed the initiatives of his own Country aimed at promoting and safeguarding the element.
The Power Point presentations used by the delegates as support for the meetings have already been collected and will be published on the Mediterranean Diet website www.mediterradiet.org.
As far as the Italian commitments are involved, the coordinator of this year, Mr. Pasquale Giuditta, manager at the Ministry of the Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, has introduced the discussion by briefly disclosing the two publications and pointing out their preliminary nature, considering that the volumes represent just a draft for the debate about the path to be followed in order to ensure the safeguard and enhancement of the UNESCO Mediterranean Diet.
All delegations thank Italy for the work done and express their willing to participate actively to the debate in order to join a shared document where to highlight the considerations of each delegation, as well as the setting out of a shared path approved by everyone.
Waiting for a document validated by all Countries, the delegations ask Italy lo limit the dissemination of the present volumes, pointing out in any case their provisional and evolutionary nature. After a long talk, it has been outlined the agenda for the updating of the two publications. In the specific, as far as the White Paper is concerned, it has been decided that: by next 15 June, the delegations send their general remarks to Italy;
by next 15 October, the delegations send their specific contributions to Italy. As far as the Booklet is concerned, the delegations have expressed their willing to draw up their own presentation according to a shared structure. It has therefore been decided that: by next 15 June, each delegation will send Italy its own remarks about the structure of the sheets, also by taking into account the one settled in the present Booklet; then, Italy will formulate the proposal of a shared homogeneous format (layout, number of  characters and pictures, items) and, by 15 of October, the delegations will send Italy their own presentations.
At the end of the meeting, Italy has ensured that documents will be sent in a short while, in an open format, in order to allow the elaboration of the integrations and of the new contributions.
